OUR MISSION

You carried the weight for everyone else. Out here, you can set it down.

Beyond the Break helps veterans, first responders and their families heal, body and mind, through the ocean and the outdoors. Founded by a first responder for those who serve, we use surfing, paddling and mindful movement to help people find their way past life's hardest moments.

OUR VISIONNo one who serves should face the hard moments alone. We envision a crew on every coast, where veterans, first responders and their families find healing in the water, come back stronger, and pass it on.

Those who serve spend years running toward the hardest moments of other people's lives. Coming home — or clocking out — doesn't always mean the noise stops.

Out on the water, the world gets simple. Just the next wave, the people beside you, and a body working hard enough that the mind can finally go quiet. That's where healing starts — physical and mental, together.

Every session pairs participants with trained instructors and peer mentors, so no one paddles out alone.

OUR STORY

Founded by one of your own.

16 years firefighter paramedic 20+ years surfing Helped start Surfers for Autism

I spent 16 years as a firefighter paramedic in South Florida. Many of the people I love wear a badge, a uniform, or a flag on their shoulder — police, fire, military. I've seen up close what the job takes out of them. And I've seen what the salt water gives back.

I've surfed for more than 20 years, and I was part of the group that helped start Surfers for Autism. Watching kids light up in the ocean showed me what the water can do. There were seasons in my own career when surfing was what kept me steady.

After everything I've seen over the years, my connection to the ocean is stronger than ever. That's why now is the time. Beyond the Break is my way of paddling out with the people I served alongside — and their families — so they can find that same steadiness.

WHY "BEYOND THE BREAK"

Past the crashing waves, the water opens up.

In surfing, the break is where the waves crash, and getting past it takes effort, timing, and a little courage. Out beyond the break, the water opens up and things get quiet.

For those who serve, there's another kind of break: the moments when the job, the memories, or life itself pushes you close to breaking. We believe there's a way through that, too. You get there by stepping outside your comfort zone, side by side with people who understand.

Beyond the break is where we figure life out, find meaning again, and come back stronger.

How a session works

  1. 01

    Reset

Arrive, gear up and breathe. A short warm-up and beach briefing — no pressure, no paperwork marathon.

  2. 02

    Reconnect

Paddle out with certified instructors and peer mentors who have served too. Catch waves, wipe out, laugh about it.

  3. 03

    Rise

Share a meal and stories on the sand. Leave with a crew you can call — and the next session on the calendar.
